College Unbound Wins Edison Award

College Unbound won a 2011 Silver Edison Award for Best New Product under the "Living, Working & Learning Environments - Higher Education Systems" category.
"Providence, RI, April 11, 2011 – In a packed ballroom of top international entrepreneurs and innovators, the small Rhode Island start-up project “College Unbound” received a Silver 2011 Edison Best New Product Award™ last Tuesday night, April 5th, for its innovation to reverse college drop-out rates and increase quality of learning.
In addition to featuring this year’s Best New Product Award recipients, the program at the historic Capitale ballroom in New York featured the presentation of the prestigious Edison Achievement Award to Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Company, and to John Hendricks, Founder and Chairman of Discovery Communications.  Danny Forster of the Science Channel’s “Build it Bigger” acted as emcee, with special guest Mike Rowe, host of the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe.”
An initiative of the educational non-profit Big Picture Learning, headquartered in Providence, College Unbound up-ends traditional educational practices and places value on students “doing,” not just “knowing.” College Unbound curricula emphasize real-world projects and internships over learning done passively in a classroom. Two partner universities, Roger Williams University in Rhode Island and Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire, now offer College Unbound bachelor’s degrees to their students."
